We are fortunate to live in one of the most breathtaking parts of the country. The uplands that surround Stanhope are rugged landscapes that contain massive wetlands in the form of blanket bogs and are home to a wide variety of wildlife including birds, mammals, insects, amphibians and reptiles. The valley and the river Wear, winding through our Dale, hosts different wildlife to the uplands. But, did you know that if you are out on an adventure with the kids and you spot a common toad, or a curlew, or water vole (etc) that you can report it? It is called citizen science. Spot some wildlife, record the information, go home and enter it on-line…That’s it, that’s all and reporting your sightings will help scientists to develop a better understanding of habitat, behaviour, and frequency of species (among other things) of the wildlife in our area.
So why not make citizen science a part of your next adventure? Find out more and/or report your wildlife sightings.
