During SATs week our Year 5 children have taken part in an exciting literacy project. They were given three types of fictional creature: an Endobot, a Yarnie and a Troiler. Using just this information they were asked to choose one creature and create a character description and sketch of what they think the creature is like. Their next task was to go into the school orchard and create a habitat for their chosen creature. The children had great fun designing and building their homes for their chosen creature. After that, the children took on the role of an Estate Agent and wrote details of their house which is for sale using persuasive and formal language.
However, following a viewing one of the Yarnies, Endobots or Troilers made a formal complaint to the Estate Agent. They complained that the description of the house and the reality were not the same. Children had to write in role as the creature and write a formal letter of complaint. To finish off their project the children then became Estate Agents again. This time they had to write a response to the complaint, addressing the concerns raised by the creature.
This activity helped to develop the children’s creativity, problem solving skills and resourcefulness as well as team work. The quality of their written work was outstanding and has been used for a wonderful display to show off their skills.
