On Friday 4th March 2016, Class 3 visited The Workplace in Newton Aycliffe to attend The Safety Carousel. When we arrived we took part in a ‘Who wants to be a millionaire’ quiz. We then rotated through six different activities throughout the day. The events included fire safety where we put into teams and had to hit the buzzer to answer questions. We also had to assess the scene of a road traffic accident and investigate what had caused the accident and how it could have been avoided. Next we attended a workshop run by the Coastguard service and learnt about water safety at the beach, near rivers and lakes. We learnt what the different flags meant and how to get help if someone is in trouble in the water. After lunch we went into a workshop on Internet Safety. This was very interesting and such an important issue for young people. Although we could have spent all afternoon talking about internet safety, we had to move on to the next session – fire hazards. We investigated a house and had to identify the fire hazards in each room. Finally, our last session was all about the risks of electricity. This included safety around electric pylons and electrical devices in the home.
The session was excellent and contained a lot of information about a wide range of safety issues. The children had a great time and learnt lots of new facts which will hopefully help to keep them safe.
