What is the difference between ‘Gifted’ and ‘Talented’?
‘Gifted’ is defined as being exceptionally able in academic subjects, such as English, Maths, Science, History or Geography. ‘Talented’ is defined as being exceptionally skilled in practical subjects such as Music, PE and Drama.
How are Gifted and Talented Students identified?
Initial identification is based on Class Teacher’s discussing their children with the Gifted & Talented Co-ordinator at regular progress meetings. Children can also be identified by the Senior Leadership Team through data analysis. From then on, Gifted and Talented children can be identified at any time throughout the school year. The Gifted & Talented Co-ordinator establishes the Register at the beginning of the academic year and the Register is then reviewed every term.

- Change the pace, resources, support, questioning, outcome and role.
- The opportunity to work at higher levels using differentiated tasks.
- Provide appropriate, challenging feedback.
- The opportunity to investigate real life situations, to solve real problems and produce real solutions.
- Regular monitoring and reporting, to the G&T coordinator, of children’s performance.
- Opportunities for more able children to work together.
- Involvement in County Sports Festivals.
- Representing the school at musical/drama performances.
- Attendance at Gifted and Talented events offered throughout the year by Wolsingham Comprehensive.
- Taking part in National Art projects.
How will I know if my child is on the Register?
If your child is identified as Gifted and Talented and is placed on the Register, you will be contacted by the Gifted and Talented Co-ordinator who will discuss this with you in more detail. An Individual Education Plan will be written detailing the strategies planned to ensure your child fulfils their potential.
A child can be added to or removed from the Register at any time during the school year. If your child is to be removed from the Register the Gifted and Talented Co-ordinator will discuss this with you first. If your child was on the Register in the previous year, it does not necessarily mean that they will be on the Register the following year as a new Register is developed at the beginning of each academic year.
