On Tuesday 6th March 2018, we had a very special treat which was described as: “ A wonderful way to spend an afternoon!”
We held our annual Celebration of Music but this time we went to the Methodist Chapel in Stanhope. The Chapel provides an ideal environment with excellent acoustics for the instruments and singing.
The event started off with Mrs Millar (Violin Teacher) who introduced her pupils and talked about their progress. We then had a wonderful rendition from Chloe B., Priya B., Chloe G., Grace H. and Lily H. This was followed by Ms Hughes who led Key Stage One in a great performance using the Djembe drums and singing session. Class 3 then demonstrated their skills on the Ukulele. Having only been playing for a few weeks, they were very impressive.
The afternoon was rounded off with our brass players. Liam B. played the Baritone along with Georgia B. playing the Cornet and Daisy P. also playing the Cornet. These children have been playing for some time and gave an excellent performance. Phoebe C. gave a solo performance on the Tenor Horn. Some of the younger children who have just started learning their brass instruments then gave us a demonstration of their skills. Lawrence C., Niamh T., Ashton G.did a fantastic job and were supported by Phoebe C.
We are incredibly proud of all of our children who had the courage to stand up in front of a packed audience and play their instruments. We are also very grateful to our music teachers from the Durham Music Service who rearranged their teaching commitments in order to support our children.
Many thanks to all of the parents and members of our community who attended to support the school and our musicians. Music has always been and will continue to be a key element of our curriculum. Research shows that music helps children to learn and give joy and pleasure.
On Wednesday 7th March 2018, children from Year 2 up to Year 6 attended a theatre production by Firehorse Theatre company. The production was called The B Word and it focussed on Bullying. The production was excellent, very informative and gave children practical advice on how to deal with the problem of bullying. The show was interactive, with a number of our children actually taking part in the story which they thoroughly enjoyed.
The show addressed issues such as why people bully others, how to identify bullying and what this behaviour might look like or feel like. It also spent time advising children on what action they can take if they witness bullying or find themselves victims of bullying.
Following the show, teachers followed up with work and discussions in the classroom. If parents or children would like any further advice on this subject, it can be found on the NSPCC website.
Please be sure to check the Letters Home section frequently to ensure that you are informed about what is happening at school and to make sure that you have received the letters that have been sent home with your child. Thank you.

An enormous thank you to all of The Friends of Stanhope Barrington who sourced prizes, sold tickets and helped out at our Christmas events over the festive period. This money will be banked into the PTA fund which provides a £5 per child per term discount on trips and educational visits – ensuring every family benefits from the money raised. Once again, many thanks for your continued support.

On Thursday 21st December 2017, our school choir visited Crosshills Nursing Home in Stanhope. We visit every year to sing traditional carols and also to share some of our Christmas Performance songs with the residents, their relatives and staff.
Everyone sang along and had a lovely time. Afterwards the children were treated to juice and biscuits.
The sang beautifully and were a real credit to the school.
On Monday 18th December 2017, the whole school came together to take part in our first ever Christingle Workshop. Over 130 children took part in the workshop in the school hall. Mrs Howes delivered a presentation explaining the meaning and symbolism of the Christingle. The workshop was facilitated by staff, Foundation Governors and The Friends of Stanhope Barrington. The children had a great time and learnt about the different elements of the Christingle.
The Christingles were then used during our Candlelight Procession from school to the Methodist Chapel, where we delivered our first Christmas performance of the year. Following our second performance in St. Thomas’ Church, the children took home their very own Christingle. This event was hugely popular and we hope to deliver a similar event again next year.
Thank you to everyone who helped to make the workshop so special.
