PE

Policy:

Staff Co-ordinator: Miss A. Hunter-Purvis

Link Governor: Mrs. L. Johns

Statement of Intent 2021 – 2022:

 Our Vision:
A place where our children, adults and community can grow and thrive rooted in
Kindness, Fellowship and Confidence.

At Stanhope Barrington C of E Primary, we aim to inspire an active generation of children to enjoy PE lessons and encourage them to access a wide range of different sports. We provide opportunities for the children to take part in competitive activities alongside developing their confidence, sportsmanship and promote healthy lifestyles whilst maintaining a fully inclusive PE Curriculum. Our curriculum ensures children engage in a minimum of two taught physical sessions per week utilising our comprehensive PE resource (Complete PE). We focus on the physical, cognitive, social, well-being and development goals ensuring everyone succeeds in PE. We also focus on getting children moving again following the impact of the Covid Pandemic linking PE with other curriculum areas such as Science and RSHE. Beginning in Early Years, the children are taught to a high standard, learning the fundamental skills that are extended and adapted to both support and challenge. At the beginning of Key Stage 2, the children will learn to swim and will continue until children are confident in the water and meet the national curriculum expectations for swimming. Stanhope is based on the River Wear and therefore our curriculum focuses on water safety and cold-water shock as our children often access the river and local outdoor swimming pool. The children are exposed to a wide range of clubs and school visitors which supports their experiences, skills and curiosity. We also facilitate participation in festivals and competitions with other primary and secondary schools in our local area. This instils life-long values such as fair play and cooperation. Positioned in the heart of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, we can provide the children with visits to Stanhope Outdoor Swimming Pool and Outdoor Adventure Centres enabling us to deliver a broad range of Outdoor Adventure Activities whilst utilising our local area.

Opal Learning Zone

How can you negotiate space?

How can you negotiate space? – One of the huge highlights of our week is Mrs McArdle’s PE lessons. This week the children have been attempting to negotiate space effectively whilst moving in a range of ways. We pretended to be a range of different things before motoring around the main hall attempting to avoid collisions.

Fine Motor Skills – Alongside our weekly PE sessions, the children have daily fine motor exercises that help to improve our early writing skills. The children take part in a range of activities which include Dough Disco, carousel activities and also utilising equipment such as scissors appropriately. Here Amber is showing her excellent pincer grip as she placed the cereal on the stick.

Amethyst Learning Zone

Fine Motor Skills – Alongside our discrete PE lessons, we have also been mastering our fine motor skills. All of the children undertake a daily fine / gross motor session which aims to improve our early writing skills. We have noticed a huge impact with how the children are using pencils and scissors. The children now seek those activities in the continuous provision showing their confidence.

Sapphire Learning Zone

Multi-skills Festival – The Sapphire and Amethyst learning zones got to take part in a multi-skills festival hosted at our school. We got to show off our ball skills, work in teams and score lots of goals.

Ball Skills – Around the topic of hands we have been working hard to become more confident within our ball skills. We have looked at catching and receiving, targets and putting our skills into practice to play a simple game. In the topic Team games, we have worked on our skills of communication and becoming a good team player.

Ruby Learning Zone

Ball Skills – Our P.E focus this half-term was on Dodgeball. The children developed their throwing and catching as well as their movement skills, identifying the best movements to avoid contact in different situations and then worked on applying their decision making in a game environment. The children discussed tactics, and played games where the rules changed and allowed for them to adapt their tactics to suit the new game.

Dodgeball – Children in Ruby Learning Zone are learning new dodgeball skills this term. So far, we have learned about different dodges to avoid contact and the various throws we can use to help with our accuracy. We are playing various versions of the game and thinking carefully about how we adapt our tactics to give ourselves the best chance of winning.

Emerald Learning Zone

Counter Balance – The children have been working on counter balances this half term. They worked with a partner to devise a sequence which included a counter balance a movement out of the balance and then a different counter balance. They were all fantastic and were able to critique their performances based on skills such as cannon and mirroring movements.

Upper KS2 ‘Yogathon’ – Both the Diamond and Emerald Learning Zones got to join in our inaugural ‘Yogathon’. We all joined in with a yoga class then got to have little boogie at the end!

Diamond Learning Zone

Orienteering – This half term’s focus in PE was orienteering. The children used ‘face maps’ to learn basic map reading skills before moving on to point to point activities using a map of the school grounds. The children had lots of fun trying to find the different points hiding around the school.

Counter Balance – The Diamond Learning Zone have been focusing on counter balances in PE this half term. The children worked with a partner to create their own sequence of balances using twists, turns and rolls to make their performance flow. They came up with some great ideas using elevation and a variety of different apparatus.
