Statement of Intent:
Opal Learning Zone
Weardale Adventure Centre – What an experience! The Opal Learning Zone have been lucky enough to have an educational visit to the Weardale Adventure Centre. This was a fantastic opportunity to develop our gross motor skills as we completed a number of fun and gruelling tasks. A highlight of the day was completing a Night Line assault course which tested our resilience skills but was very enjoyable for both children and staff.

Skipping – In PE, the children have a had a great time learning to skip. We took part in a skipping workshop and the children have developed a real passion for skipping, so much so we adapted out Spring topic to accommodate the children’s interest. The children have improved their skills and techniques from both practice and enjoyment.
Ruby Learning Zone
Cricket and Basketball – This term the children in Ruby have been developing our cricket and basketball skills in our weekly lessons. The children also enjoyed getting to compete in a sports day and had a fantastic time when they had a taster session of Ultimate Frisbee.

Diamond Learning Zone
Dance – This half term, Miss Watson (from Wolsingham School) kindly offered to teach our class some dance. The children focused their routines on the idea of electricity and created some fantastic sequences demonstrating a range of different moves.
Ball Skills – This half term, the Diamond Learning Zone have been focusing on ball skills. We have enjoyed learning games and techniques that has built us up to playing a game of football. It was lovely to see some of the children taking an interest to football which gave them the opportunity to show their competitive personalities.

Skills Training – When possible, the children have really enjoyed learning with our sports coach Josh, who comes in to teach PE on Tuesdays. His focus has continued to be on improving basic skills including, movement, throwing and catching and spatial awareness.
We have also completed a topic on Music and Movement. The children loved learning to move in-time to a range of songs and rhymes. They have also just completed their “Elf-Training” course, learning a range of useful techniques, just in time for Christmas.
Throwing and catching – The children have really enjoyed having our sports coach Josh who comes in to teach PE on Tuesdays. His focus this half term has been throwing and catching and spatial awareness.
Gymnastics – We have also completed a topic in Gymnastics. Following a topic on “Animals,” we have been practising gymnastic movements including jumping, rolling, hopping and skipping.
Animal antics – Today in P.E we experimented with balancing and carrying equipment on different parts of our body. This was really tricky but we did a great job. We moved along balance beams, jumping and landing correctly.
Creative Movement – In PE, the children have been taking part in a dance topic, using the Gunpowder plot as their stimulus. Every week they have had to dance and recreate a different part of the story. They have created some brilliant movements and enjoyed the theme, after covering it in our Literacy sessions.
Yoga – The children have also taken part in some Yoga as part of their mental and emotional wellbeing. We have used Zen den and cosmic kids yoga to support our mindfulness sessions.
Spatial Awareness – We are lucky to still have our sports coach Josh who comes in to teach PE on a Tuesday. His focus this half term has been balls skills and spatial awareness. We have taken part in lots of games that focus on our spatial awareness and hand eye coordination.
Gymnastics – We have also completed a topic in Gymnastics this half term. We have been following the theme of Landscapes and Cityscapes. Each week we have been practicing our basic gymnastics moves.
Yoga – Since returning to school, Class 3 have really enjoyed their yoga sessions on a Monday afternoon. Our first focus was ‘washing hands’ and the children then choose their own topic. Yoga gave the children opportunity to relax, use their gross-motor skills and refresh their minds. Each child enjoyed each session.
Ball Skills – The focus of PE this half term has been on ball skills. The children have developed throwing, catching, defending and attacking skills in a range of games. We have used footballs, tennis balls, basket balls and hockey equipment to refine our skills. During each PE lesson we have played an invasion game. The children have offered meaningful hints and tips on how their peers can improve their skills and become more successful.
PE with Josh – This term in PE, Josh has been working on spatial awareness activities. These have involved lots of fun games and ball skills.
The Haka – In PE this half term, our focus was the Haka. The children had lots of fun learning the moves as well as the chant. Children worked in a group to perfect their routines and later performed as a whole class.
Invasion Games & Fitness Activities – This term Class 5 PE sessions will be led by Josh Ridley from Durham County Sports. The children will be taking part in a number of activities designed to ensure team work is valued and understood. The children will be taking part in a number of indoor and outdoor invasion games, classroom fitness activities and a selection of objectives that will inform outcomes for elite athletes.
